The plot is fairly straightforward: an idle father and his idle son are cook- ing their meagre meal by the door of the hut, where the young man’s wife is in labour. The woman dies and the two have to seek a loan to buy a shroud for her burial. The story reveals how both Ghisu and Madhav behave in an inhuman and selfish manner, by not taking care of Budhia even when she is sick and is dying. They are both so involved in themselves and expect to live a better life without even working. This is a classic social-realistic tale of downtrodden victimhood. It satirizes rituals and indifference of dalits who feel so much oppressed and dejected that they think their wretched miserable life is not going to change for better in future.
